Women Giving Back (WGB) stands as a beacon of hope and support for women and children in crisis. This remarkable organization, through its dedicated efforts, has been instrumental in transforming lives by providing essential clothing and other necessities at no cost. In this article, we discuss the history, mission, and purpose of Women Giving Back, exploring how they have become a pivotal part of the community in the Greater Washington D.C. area.

The Genesis of Women Giving Back

Women Giving Back was born out of a simple yet profound realization: many women and children in crisis often leave their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Recognizing this dire need, WGB was established to provide these individuals with basic necessities, free of charge. The organization's foundation is built on the belief that everyone deserves the basics in life, and it is this core principle that drives their mission.

A Unique Boutique Experience

What sets Women Giving Back apart is its unique boutique-like atmosphere, where clients are not just recipients of aid but are treated with dignity and respect. Qualified by their case managers and social workers, most clients are living in shelters or part of transitional programs in the DMV area. WGB's volunteers offer personal service and uplifting interaction, ensuring that each visit is more than just a transaction—it's an experience that helps rebuild lives and restore dignity.

Mission and Purpose: Clothing as a Catalyst for Change

At the heart of Women Giving Back's mission is the distribution of donated clothing, shoes, accessories, and other essentials for both women and children. This approach is based on the understanding that clothing is more than just a basic need—it's a tool for empowerment. By providing these items, WGB helps increase self-esteem and resilience in their clients, giving them the confidence to tackle other challenges in their lives.

Beyond the Wardrobe

The impact of Women Giving Back extends far beyond the tangible items they distribute. By helping women secure stable housing, gain and maintain employment, and become financially sound, WGB plays a crucial role in their overall journey towards independence and self-sufficiency. The organization takes pride in watching their clients move up and away from the hurdles that once held them back.

The Lasting Impact of Women Giving Back: Transforming Lives and Communities

The statistics speak volumes about the impact of Women Giving Back. In 2022 alone, the organization volunteered over 17,000 hours and served more than 24,000 women and children. The in-kind value of clothing and diapers distributed amounted to nearly $3 million. These numbers underscore the significant role WGB plays in the lives of those they serve and the community at large.

"I founded Women Giving Back to fill a need that the shelters had. Women and children, many escaping domestic violence situations, had only the clothes on their back. Our mission is to provide them with clothing for all aspects of life at no charge. Our volunteers sort through like-new donations and put together wardrobes to help launch new lives.

Since our start in 2007 WGB has:

  • Served 24,000 women and children
  • Enlisted 2,500 volunteers
  • Enrolled 1,300 referral agency partners
  • Collaborated with 80 community distribution partners
  • Provided 26 countries and 17 states with clothing distribution
It is with the help of our valuable partners, like AV, that we can make such an impact in building new lives."

How to Get Involved with Women Giving Back

Women Giving Back (WGB) offers a variety of ways for individuals and organizations to get involved and support their mission of helping women and children in crisis. Whether you're looking to volunteer, donate, or participate in events, there are numerous opportunities to contribute to this noble cause. Here's a comprehensive guide on how you can become a part of the WGB community and make a meaningful impact.

Volunteering is one of the most direct ways to get involved with Women Giving Back. The organization relies on volunteers for a range of activities, from assisting clients in selecting clothing to managing the store's operations. As a volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to provide personal service and create a positive, uplifting experience for the clients.

Community Involvement and Volunteerism

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Women Giving Back. The organization relies heavily on the generosity and dedication of individuals and groups who contribute their time and effort. From helping clients shop for clothing to managing the needs of the store, volunteers play a vital role in every aspect of WGB's operations. The organization welcomes individuals, families, schools, businesses, religious organizations, and clubs to join their cause.

Opportunities for Everyone

WGB welcomes volunteers from all walks of life, including individuals, families, schools, businesses, religious organizations, and clubs. Whether you're an adult, a teenager, or looking to involve your entire family, there are suitable volunteering options available. Children as young as 12 can volunteer when accompanied by an adult, and those 16 and older can volunteer unaccompanied.

Women Giving Back Donations

Clothing and Essential Items

Donating clothing, shoes, accessories, and other essential items is crucial to WGB's mission. The organization distributes these donations to women and children in need, free of charge. You can organize a donation drive in your community or workplace, or simply donate items you no longer need.

Financial Contributions

Monetary donations are equally important, as they help cover operational costs and allow WGB to reach more women and children. You can make a one-time donation or set up a recurring contribution. Every dollar makes a difference in the lives of those WGB serves.

Engaging in Community and Fundraising Events

Women Giving Back hosts several annual events, such as the Women’s Empowerment Luncheon, Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, and Tee Off for WGB. These events not only raise funds and awareness for the organization but also celebrate the power of community and the impact of collective efforts. They provide an opportunity for donors, volunteers, and supporters to engage with the mission of WGB and witness firsthand the difference they are making.

Corporate and Community Outreach

If you're part of a business or community organization, consider partnering with WGB for outreach events. This can include hosting a fundraising event, sponsoring an existing WGB event, or engaging your employees in volunteer opportunities.

Advocacy and Awareness: Spreading the Word

Raising awareness about WGB and its mission is a vital form of support. You can advocate for the organization by sharing their work on social media, in your community, and among your networks. The more people know about WGB, the greater the impact they can make.

Educational and Inspirational Involvement

Educating others about the challenges faced by women and children in crisis and how WGB is addressing these issues can inspire more people to get involved. Consider hosting informational sessions or discussions in your community or workplace.

Long-Term Commitment and Support

Becoming a Regular Volunteer or Donor

Consider making a long-term commitment to WGB by becoming a regular volunteer or setting up recurring donations. Consistent support ensures that WGB can continue its work effectively and plan for the future.

Joining Committees or the Board

If you're looking for a deeper level of involvement, inquire about joining one of WGB's committees or even their board. This allows you to contribute your skills and expertise to the strategic direction and governance of the organization.
